This project evaluated a 4.5 mile section of 120th Avenue between US 85 and Tower Road. It included an existing conditions evaluation, robust public outreach, traffic analysis, an access control plan, incorporation of the Envision framework, development of three alternatives and a preferred alternative, concept design, cost estimates and a phasing plan. Key stakeholders for this project included Adams County, City of Commerce City and City of Brighton.

The project team evaluated existing issues and concerns, then guided the partner agencies thru the process of evaluating three typical sections based on a list of 10 criteria and developing a preferred alternative that garnered a letter of support from each agency. Throughout the project, a very engaged Technical Advisory Committee consisting of the partner agencies, the 27J School District, RTD and DRCOG met to discuss project elements and resulted in unique corridor design elements that will improve safety and consistency across the corridor. Specifically, the concept design modified the US 85 interchange design at Peoria Street to better align with existing right-of-way and remove the skewed design. It also included access improvements at Prairie View High School, a new school bus pullout on 120th Avenue, will incorporate future bus stop design recommendations in the final plan, and includes a variety of unique design elements that will improve safety for all users on the corridor. The project team supported City staff in development of a BUILD grant application for 100% design of the 4.5-mile corridor. Staff also used the information gathered during the project to support application of an HSIP grant for a traffic signal at Salem Street. This project is on schedule to be completed in May 2025.
